Image/Text
Films by Polish contemporary artists
Image/Text refers to the transition from the domination of the 'pure visuality' of modernist art to postmodern 'textual practices', so important for the emergence of contemporary art in the 1960s.
Referring to the work of Clement Greenberg and Michael Fried, Craig Owens characterized modernism as a striving to cleanse art - painting or sculpture - of qualities external to the media. What modernist artists, as part of this striving, consistently attempted to push out of the scope of art was writing and literature, associated since at least Lessing's Laoko?n with a completely different aesthetic experience, one based on time. The apprehension of modernist 'pure visuality' was supposed to evoke a sense of timelessness, immediacy, and non-conceptuality. However, the perception of art postulated by modernism became, in the context described by Owens, impossibly utopian.
The programme features 17 works, chiefly from the 1970s and the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. They have been made using various media, including 8 mm, 16 mm, and 32 mm film, video and computer animation. There is found footage and amateur film. Some of the films are black-and-white and some are in colour, with and without sound, analytical or lyrical. Made by women and men. Texts, words, letters - introducing order, narrating, but also confusing, falsifying, being rearranged, broken up, deconstructed, introducing chaos. The set is not chronological, its purpose is rather to confront and release new meanings resulting from unexpected conjunctions.
